The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) Professor Julius Okojie say’s the change of University of lagos name making waves is not an issue, as this is not the first varsity to have the experience of its name changed,which he said is the seventh.
Professor Okojie made the disclosure today at the state house Abuja while responding to questions from the correspondents at the villa.
“We have had Ife changed in 1987, we have had Usman Dan Fodio now University of Sokoto, we have had Yola, Modibbo Adamawa, we have Nnamdi Azikiwe which was university of Awka before, the Executive Secretary noted .
He said the President announcing the change of name on democracy day in honour of Abiola was in order.
Professor Okojie said, there is nothing that is introduced to the university system that students won’t react, from increased fees to what anything that one can imagine.
The NUC boss noted that President Jonathan made consultation with appropriate quarters before taking steps contrary to what many opine that no one was consulted prior to the name change.
The Professor said President Jonathan is following due process for the implementation of the change of name.
“He is a man who believes in due process and he won’t do anything out of the ordinary’’ Okojie noted.
